Hen off eggs for how long?

Agreed. So with this hatch ... let the hen finish what she can, discard the failed part of the result, and move on to a wiser future.

I guess. I never did that. I can't say I really care. If she gets up I'll just stick them under another broody hen (with no eggs) that I'm trying to break. If they are fertile the due date has to be soon. Boy wouldn't she be thrilled.

What candlepower do you need to candle an egg? My broody has hatched three and is sitting on one egg. I decided to candle it to see if it's even viable; but even though I have high lumen flashlights, I can't see anything.

1-2 days ago. I removed the egg, placed it under another broody and told the first she's done. I'm pretty sure all 4 eggs were laid in the same day.

I've had them stay off the eggs (return to the wrong nest) for over a day with no ill effects.

The chicks sure are cute, btw. This time (contrary to all of the past times due to fear) I'm making a point of handling them as much as possible (they don't seem to mind at all). I introduce myself as their godfather and put them in mama's face and tell them to see how beautiful she is. Mama, just goes, "Ooo... Oooo..."

Broody mama has already taken her 3 chicks outside the coop. Wow!

I just recently candled my eggs and we are almost 10 days in... and all the eggs had chicks in them!!!!
