hen on a nest in cold weather?

They are almost 4 weeks old today but will have to bring them up from the barn. The waterers will freeze b/c it is going down below zero again for the next 3 nights. Ugh!!! These chicks have had a tumultuous start in life.

I had to do the same with mine just to be safe. I brought them up to the garage. It was not heated but at least 20 degrees warmer.

My downstairs TV room is starting to smell a bit "chicken-y". Its that high powered protein meal they get.

We have the temps going down into the minus area ....again!!! For the next 2 nights. So its back and fourth for a few more nights. This is all getting a bit old. I would never ever have done this if I had known this was going to be the coldest winter in over a decade.

The chicks will be 5 weeks this coming Thursday. I have a baby rooster and a baby hen and both have crazy coloring since the fathers were ameracuna and the mothers were probably barnevelders.

As of Wednesday, they will stay in the coop in the horse feeder with the dads and moms nearby. I'm hoping I can put them at the end of February with one of the dads in the breeding pen until they can safely go in with the laying hens.
