Hi All

Desperately hoping for some advice on whether this chick is a hen or roo? We nursed it back to health after it was extremely sick so it'll be sad if a boy but I suspect it's a rooster... He/she is around 4 months (so we were told). The second question, the seller has Rhode Island Reds so I was thinking this chick may be a Rhode island cross? Any help is appreciated thank you!

With the white legs and yellowish feathers, it looks more like a buff orpington or buff orpington cross than a RIR. It might have some pointy hackle feathers (indicating cockerel) but it's hard to tell with how shredded some of those feathers are. Either way, you did a good thing by nursing it back to health.

Agreed. On everything.

Try posting some new pics in a couple weeks. I can't tell anything with how shredded it's feathers are. I don't think I see any male specific saddles though. I'm thinking it's a pullet, but could potentially be a slow developing cockerel.

Definitely saying male for this one. I see wing patches and some male specific patterning. Plus, those legs are quite large too. But again, it is hard to make out with all that shredding. I agree that he is no RIR.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the responses. I was also leaning towards roo but was in denial, will definitely post pictures in a few weeks to update and confirm. And yes, the seller mentioned Orpington but I couldn't believe it and thought it was crossed with one of the Rhodies😅.

Thank you, it will be so sad if it does turn out to be a roo but it's just one of those things with chickens😞 will definitely update in a few weeks time.
