hen or roo??

I will try to get some clearer whole body photos tomorrow! Thanks for the help with my girl!

Took me several tries but I got a few side pics of the body of my French black copper maran. What do you think? I still am not sure as to what line she hails from, I'm awaiting a response but am not sure if I'll get one. I plan on buying to from north woods poultry also, via air mail

These guys can be so hard to photograph. lol I take lots of photos in a row, and later throw away all I don't use.

Glad to see you posted on the BCM board- someone will chime in and give some opinions. here is some amazing information found there. When I started to get serious about BCM, I read the entire thread. It's like taking a college course on chickens. lol This is a "young" breed, so they are still full of issues, so, none are perfect, so it's nice to have others look at our birds so we can learn what we are looking at.

First, let's talk about "type" (the diagram of body shape that I sent.) Look back to the diagram, and you'll see that the diagram hen's shoulder slopes slightly downward to waist. So here's what that looks like. Here's one of our pullets when she was 5 weeks old (before she started to get her hackle color in). Look at her shoulder, and follow the line to her tail. She has good type. You can see the tilted brick of her body. You can see that your pullet has different tail feathers- that's only just because these two are from different lines. I think your pullet's tail looks nice. Her back is long and wing also points to her vent, which is good too.

In the photos that you sent, your pullet is either standing oddly (this is my guess), or, her back may be sloping uphill- which would not be considered good type. I'm guessing more that you just caught her in awkward poses since she was being squirmy. Watch her carefully for awhile. Does she stand like this pullet more often (with her head and shoulders more pulled upward) than with her low back and rear end pointing upward?

Also, see our pullet's shanks and feet? The feathering goes all the way down the toe, leg feathering is the French version of BCM. The English version has no leg feathers. I can't tell from the photos... does your pullet have any leg feathering at all?

Now, are you seeing any copperish mottling like this at the wing tips or sides (below) anywhere on the wings of your pullet? (Look carefully, this one is important to know if you really are interested in the breed.)

One last thing... See your pullet's ear muff? Is her earlobe next to it white, or is it red? That should be pink or red, not white.
