Hen or Roo?

Also when buying chicks some stores order in pullets that are 95% accurate they are hens, other stores bring in straight runs where you will get hens or roosters, .

If your buying from a breeder you can specify you cannot have roosters and they should know what they have, to avoid having to re-home the roosters

When purchasing chicks from any source the question of whether the birds are "sexed pullets" or "straight run" should be asked and the purchasing decision made from there.

Many breeders sell their birds as straight run only due to not being comfortable doing vent sexing. To obtain a sexed bird from a private person will often require purchasing older birds that have reached the point where gender is fairly tell-able. You are less likely to find sexed chicks from a small source or breeder (outside of sex linked crossed or auto-sexing breeds) than from a large scale hatchery or retail outlet that sources from a hatchery.

I also had to rehome a "surprise" cockerel. Talk to your local feed store. They gave me the name of someone who would take him.
