Hen puffed out like a turkey

My almost one year old Wynadotte hen, for two weeks now, has been walking around puffed out almost always. She is not at the bottom of the pecking order but lately my other Wynadotte was chasing her, she got puffy, and she gets puffy when my Roo wants to be romantic. It's like she is not putting up with anyone's crap anymore. She did it to me wings out as far as she could when I was trying to put on her saddle. People say she is broody but she only goes into lay and that's it. Just trying to figure out what her thing is and why it could have started? Thank you!

I have a broody that does that. I take her off the nest every afternoon and she struts around all puffed up.

She doesn't sit on the eggs though....does this mean it is the start of a broody? I think it is funny, especially trying to catch her last night, I laughed and told her I was not afraid of the Roo's spurs I am certainly not afraid of a chicken acting like a peacock!

I have 2 hens that do this. One of them went broody about a week ago, but the other hasn't. She still lays me an egg everyday. She walks around all fluffed up, growling and pecking everyone like a turd. I've checked her over for any signs of pests/injury and can't find a thing. So, I'm figuring that's just the way she is. They'd both been acting this way for a couple of MONTHS, by the way. At least one of them has an excuse to be a butt head now. Good luck, sorry I'm not much help!

Yes you were. Goes to show that just because they have an attitude doesn't mean they are broody. Both Wynadottes do. It is my sweet darling Lady bird (easter egger) that I wish had the attitude. She has been my favorite since a chick and use to be equal but fell to the bottom of the ladder when I lost my Roo that was all of the hens favorite. His loss really jacked up the mood of the coop. I am just glad she hasn't stopped laying. Until these new chicks grow up some more I am only getting 3 eggs a day!

Totally broody! You were right. She didn't come out of the nesting box for half of the day and I went to lock them up and I just put my hands underneath her and took my eggs. She seemed unhappy with her feathers puffed and cooing. So now, how long does this last and will she eat? She is still laying.

She is trying to get a clutch of eggs together. I have one that I keep taking the eggs, and she continues to be broody. Its been going on about a month. I take her off the nest 2x a day, she will eat, drink, and potty. Prance around like a tom turkey when anyone comes near her, then she will hop back in the nest boxes. I have tried to have her sit on eggs. She refused to stay on one nest. So I call her a wanna be broody, all I can do is hope it goes away soon!
