One of my hens is pulling feathers out of my other girls. The shaft of the feather is still there, do i need to pull the shaft out to start the regrowth of feathers?
This is the worse case in my flock.

i had this problem and whilst she did it to several chickens, one was a particular victim and bald on it's back. mine was a bully. we tried everything...solitary confinement both victim to recover a bit, and bullly to reduce her status in the pecking order. we sprayed with vile smelling anti pecking spray. she still did it and my flock looked a mess.

in the end, i found beak bits on ebay. i like the simple version not the bumper version which are hard to fit. the offending chicken wears it for a month and it prevents this behaviour and breaks the habit. it was like a miracle for us. see someone else's recommendation in the link below

I am so glad I found this thread. We were contemplating doing away with the chicken who is pulling feathers out of all the other hens and even the roo. I have ordered the beak bits and will give them a try. We only have 9 hens and a roo and really didnt want to do away with one of my best layers, but I dont like chickens with naked butts either LOL
