I have a Silkie due soon with her first nest, she is one of a pair, having never had a broody chicken before(way more ducks than i could count however lol) i need to know what do i do about the cockerel? The pair are penned... with full easy access(no ramp) to a coop and a large run but? is it like my drakes.. watch and see but they can be a risk?

I can easily remove him if need be but i don't know if that will stress the mama or ease her worries? they should hatch soon so curious on how others handle this.

My roosters have never been a problem with my chicks. They don't even seem to be interested in teaching them manners like the other hens do, they just watch out for them and aid momma hen in keeping everyone together and calm. You'll just have to keep an eye on your particular bird, but I'd give it a try at least.

Thank you, well at close up time we discovered one chick had hatched, still more to go.. so since it was night and the run was being closed down(so confined spaces) i removed him, he seemed oblivious to the fact one had hatched but was in/out as per usual, she was sat real tight on her nest, the baby was dry so clearly hatched early in the day.

I will try today when i can observe i just don't want any issues.. first clutch and young birds... thanks!
