Hello all.

I have a barred rock named Laverne who yesterday I noticed didn't eat with everyone else but she seemed like she was drinking excessively and her crop was like a little water balloon.

I brought her inside and fed her some scrambled eggs and whenever she bent over to eat water/slime came up. Her appetite was definitely not normal.

Today her appetite is back to normal but everytime she bends over to eat, slime comes out again. If you press her crop, she upchucks.

She's also making a side to side neck movement when she eats like she's adjusting her crop.

I don't have a vet that sees chickens locally. Actually there is. I used to work there as a vet tech and they'd joke about how they treated chickens but really had no idea what they were doing so I'm not reaching out to them.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I'm nearly certain your hen has sour crop. This is a yeast infection in the crop and is quite serious. Her crop is likely clogged and won't empty, and she could aspirate the vomit. You may have to do an emergency crop-emptying by turning the chicken upside-down and draining her crop, but I am not an expert at this and this procedure could kill your chicken. But this thread may be useful to you and should have more information: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...breathing-why-can-i-do.1631829/#post-27863784

Well first off anytime you put pressure on their crop there is a good chance any chicken will vomit. Lightly massaging or lightly feeling for crop issues is one thing, but don’t press on it. Smell her mouth? If it’s sour crop there should be a smell. Did you check her crop first thing this morning? If so was it empty or full?

When I say press i mean I picked her up and the pressure from my hand made her regurge. I'm not pressing it like a button. I've handled chickens for years and never seen them regurge from being handled.
