I have 4 hens that just started laying a few weeks ago. Although I have three nest boxes (we are planning for more hens next year) they all lay in one. Now the weird part: one of my hens keeps scratching out all of the straw in all of the boxes. When they first started laying one of my ladies made the straw into a lovely little nest and this worked well for about two weeks. Then this 3rd hen started laying and scratching around until she destroys the nest, spreading straw all over the floor of their coop. Why is she doing this? All four hens are continuing to lay in the same next box - but instead of laying on straw they keep having to lay on wood - no matter how many times I add new straw.

Is the front of your box open? If it is then i would put a board across the opening big enough that it will hold in the straw but small enough to let the hens still get in them.
