Hen sitting on eggs

One of my hens has been sitting on some eggs for about a week, however I am not sure that the eggs are fertile since my rooster has been kept away from the hens for a couple of months due to injury. Does someone know how long a hen can stay fertile?

I have read ten days.

I have heard anywhere from 3-4 weeks. If she will let you, try candling them.

For each successful mating, I believe she'll be fertile for the next 2-3 wks, maybe a smidge more.

She will let my husband reach under her. We have never done candling how do you do that?
