Hen sleeping away from everyone else.

I had a flock of 12 hens, and about 12 guineas, and 20 Muscovy ducks. A friend gifted us with 6 hens that she couldn't keep due to moving. At first all were on the roost, for a week, and then suddenly one of the new girls is sleeping on the floor way on the other side of the coop. We have a very large coop, and there is plenty of room. most of the ducks stay in the run. I only see them come in when I am feeding.........False alarm, I just went to count and they were all on the roosts. It is hot, so she could have been trying to cool off.

My girls all sleep on the roost, unless one of them goes broody and then she will stay in a nest box. I would look over the one hen sleeping on the floor and try to determine if anything physically is preventing her from using the roosting bar. Any signs of being picked on? Does she socialize with other chickens during the day?

Some people here on the BYC forums say that some of their chickens roost on a bar and other hens just sleep on the floor. I have seen some commercial operations on YouTube and none of the chickens have roosting bars. So I guess I would not panic if you have one chicken that prefers not to roost with the others.

Maybe she just needed some alone time. Good to hear things worked out on their own.
