So we have a Splash Cochin rooster, named Foghorn. He is still pretty young, and lives with two BO hens and sometimes with an Ameraucana pullet and bantam Cochin pullet.
Foghorn is very skittish and isn't very dominant. He is also very clumsy and his huge feathered feet make him look so silly. It's kinda funny when he trips over his own food dish once and a while!
He will bite to defend himself if your arm, hand, fingers, etc. are close enough to him, and he doesn't like to be picked up. He likes to pick fights with our tough and more experienced RIR rooster, Marty, but luckily they are separated by a wire fence.
He may be skittish and all, but he is sooo cute and sweet! He is really pretty, too.
When Foghorn first met his new BO pullets, they were shy at first. He didn't really start to show any dominance towards them. In fact, he was pretty shy and afraid of them. Then, when he started crowing and tried to mount the girls, one of them wasn't too pleased with him; in fact, they got in a fight 2-3 times! Foghorn would try to boss the hen around(named Caramel) and she would stand right up to him and puff up her neck feathers, like a rooster. They would face off like this, then jump and kick at each other, like roosters would if they were fighting. Caramel always ended up winning.
Poor Foghorn; must have been embarrassing to be beaten by one of his own hens in his own flock!
So my question is: Why did they sometimes fight like this? (Yes, Caramel IS a hen and is laying eggs!) They don't do it very often now, but just curious to know why she acted this way when Foghorn tried to mount her or show her who's boss. Maybe because she felt like she had to be the dominant hen in the flock ad didn't like being bossed? Or maybe she was just being stubborn because she knew that Foghorn doesn't have much confidence. Or maybe it was just too early for Foghorn to display that he was boss, because maybe the hens hadn't accepted him yet?
Any opinions are welcome!
