hi all-its a scorcher today in NJ and my broody hen (still at day 26) is so hot she's standing up over her eggs. I've given her icecubes in her water, and given her and her chick some watermelon (cold) to eat. But does she know what's the right temp for the eggs? Is she standing so they don't get too hot? I'm still wondering when any of them will hatch-I know there wasn't a space of 4 days from the first laid egg to the next ones...

Hi! It's hot here in NY too. I've got one on seven eggs and so far she's still setting, but maybe your hen is just trying to regulate the temp. a little bit. Good luck!

Yep she is trying to keep the eggs the right temp..
the eggs are dormant until she goes to setting, so all the eggs should hatch withen about 3 days time.. After that the mama gather her chicks and goes off to feed and water..

you can read my other post-its called" help-first broody hen-how long can eggs peep?" or something like that....this poor Henny Penny started setting 26 days ago, and my 2 other hens kept going i to lay more eggs-even after I blocked her off. I finally got it right to keep them out, but it was so late by then...she's had 17 eggs under her, and 1 chick hatched last Thursday and 1 egg broke over the weekend with gross goo inside....I got that out and threw it far away...so now she's staying put with 15 eggs and 1 chick. She only gets up once a day if that, and the chick is good to stay right with her or under her. so if anyone here knows about my other questions on that post-feel free to write back.Poor thing is just so hot today. I feel badly for her.
