My hen that I have had in several previous post is still sick and alive. First thought she was eggbound. Then someone suggested she may just have fluids collecting in her abdominal cavity, something called ascites I think. I tried using a needle to see what I could get out of the swollen area. And when I say swollen it was probably a little larger than a tennis ball hanging down between her legs.I got absolutely nothing. She started trying to stand up more last night. Her left leg is really weak or hurting I am not sure. Today she seems like she is feeling a tad better. I put her out in the barn to stretch a little. She was trying so hard to get to another chicken that was in the barn. She was hopping on one foot and using her wings to balance herself. The swelling of her bottom looks like it has gone down a little. I thought that I would try to give her a few doses of an antibiotic but I am not sure which would be the best. I have some LA200 out in the barn. But I am not sure what the dosage should be. This is just a last ditch effort to save her.We are going on 2wks that she has been down and not feeling well. She is still eating and drinking. Anyone have any suggestions please let me know. I have made plans for someone to cull her tomorrow night if she hasn't shown anymore improvement. Thanks

First off, LA200 is oxytetracycline injection. Why would you want to inject oxytetracycline ?? Just curious, do you have horses ?? You can put the equivalent in the water and get a good result. I would go to the feed store and get tylosin (tylan) and inject this before I would the la200.

You will not be able to get baytril, it is pretty hard to get from a vet.

I would use lincomycin or spectinomycin. You can also use a tetracycline like Aureomycin = Chlortetracycline in water.

I would give electrolytes and minerals along with this. Also you can feed yogurt to offset the antibiotics.

If you bird is eathing, drinking and pooping within the normal realm, then you should give her a chance. If not and this is your call I would cull her.

I would however do research on this. You will learn alot and the knowledge you get may save some one elses bird or even another one of yours.

Yes I have horses but that is not why I have it on hand. I have it for use in goats. I am fairly new to the chicken scene and I saw la200 forsale on a poultry supply website that I think I linked to from backyardchicken. I just assumed that it would be used by injection because it is an injectable antibiotic. I have been using teramyicin soluble in her water but it really hasn't helped a whole lot. I am just grasping at strings to try to save this hen. She is eating and drinking. Her poop is a little running and green most of the time. She has seemed to be doing better since yesterday. She was standing more but she is still having a hard time walking because of her bum leg. Thanks for the advice. Like I said I am new to chickens and I can use all of the info and advice that I can get. If you have anymore please let me know

If the mass in her abdomen is from internal laying, only surgery will help at this point, I'm afraid. It could be something else, but this usually is that awful condition. I've lost four hens to it and another one has it.

I just had my brother put my sick hen out of her misery. I think she must have been an internal layer. I couldn't stand the thought of her just laying around for weeks or months before she died on her on. Thanks to everyone that replied to all of my post about her.
