I read thru the threads. not sure if If anything fits my hens issue. There was 1 , but thought I needed to post and ask anyway. This is my 2cd hen in 4 months that has come up lame, hurt leg. The 1st as with this 1 , I pulled out & put her in a large dog crate away from others as a few were trying to kill them. The 1st one also had an injured wing. altho no cuts or bleeding. she didn't make it. the 2cd hen just cam up lame a few days ago. put her seperate right away. she's not improving. I just gave her some vet rx. No others are ill , but 1 Roo is limping & has for about wks. no other signs of injury or illness. The st hen was about 4 yrs old. the 2cd hen is a yr old. They get layer pellets, cracked corn, or scratch. a fresh veggie or fruit daily. Whole wheat bread 1 or 2 x's a wk. cottage cheese time to time, fresh cheese, milk, spagetti, popcorn , oatmeal, BOS, all time to time not all of that everyday , this hen does not seem to be improving as of yet, hoping the meds will help. I have a call in & waiting an apt for NIP testing to B safe. Any ides, clues on what this is. In 5 yrs I have not had any chickens have this.
Please & Thank you

I am very worried

Are your birds vaccinated for Marek's? I have read that that can manifest as limb paralysis. Also moldy feed can cause limb paralysis. How old are your pellets?

Just trying to trouble shoot with you. But I'm new myself so I don't have much insight on this.

The 1st 5 I got 5 yrs ago was , from MPC. & I have gotten a few from Agway, I believe theirs are. & all others I got from NIP tested sellers. I am not sure, but believe they were Vacc. I have 35 chickens so my feed does not sit for long, I look at it as I scoop it into the feed pail I carry out. I only buy 50 lbs at a time. I check all fresh foods I feed them to make sure there is no mold. I have lost a couple hen over the last yr, They all came from the same place & they are NIP tested. just my 1st hen that I lost a few months ago was from a friend , & no others from her flock has been sick & another friend took some from her as well & she has no issues. This 2cd hen is from that same person I got several from in Sept , they are NIP tested, But I do know one lady does get hens from where ever , but she said she QT's them . I am going to have all mine NIP tested , so I can find out whats what. I would like to save this hen. No chicken vet here, so I am on my own. Just gave her a 2cd dose of vet RX.. She seemed to be able to sit with her legs under her , instead of laying on her side.
I am very worried, I so hope someone didn't sell me a chick that was sick last yr. But weird the ones I lost are all from the same person.
your help is appreciated , all help is welcomed.

The only way you will know for sure is get a necropsy from a state animal disease lab.
If I'm understanding you right, you are saying that every few months one bird goes lame and eventually dies?
Are the lame ones really skinny?

Feed stores and TSC, and such , almost never vaccinate, it costs them too much.

I agree with seminolewind...have one of your birds necropsied to get a definitive diagnosis. Most state labs will do them for free or for a small fee. It really is the only way to know. NPIP will not test for what you are talking about.

Please read seminolewind's links on Marek's. Not trying to scare you but you need to read for yourself and see if your symptoms match.

Thank you. This is the 2cd hen that has come up lame within the last 4 months. all others are fine, all eating well. The 1st hen I lost was a big SL Wyndonnot ( sp ) . This hen that is now lame is an amaurcana , she 1yr old eats very well, not fat but not thin. seems still very alert . haven't gotten any new hens in a yr, just some in Sept, all from a NIP tested person, but she got the Amaurcanas from someone else, she said she had them QT's for 30 days or more, had them for several months B4 I bought them I kept them QT'd for 30 days so the end of Oct they were put out with the flock . My 1st hen got sick Feb, now just this hen a few days ago. I haven't gotten store chick in 4 yrs now . Just at the NH chicken swaps from NIP tested flocks
Yes I will read the info * I am having them all tested. Thank you all .

The one bad thing about Marek's is that quarantining them will not help. If the birds are carriers, they will not show any symtoms but will infect the rest of the flock. Plus, it can take up to 8 or more weeks for symptoms to appear.
