Hen under the Weather (I think)

We ve had them for 2 weeks the 2 sick birds came from one breeder and 5 other hens from another . The original sick hen is not showing any other symptoms but is lethargic and little movement but with her eyes closed. I had to remove her from the roost this morning. She is still walking but not much. Drinking when i put her beak in the water . Now the rooster is showing signs of sleeping a lot and he sounded like he was snoring but when i put some treats out he quickly came running for them. I added the Sulmet to the water about noon today so all my birds are drinking it. The 2 sick birds are out of the coop Thanks again Kathy

Watermelon seems to work very well. I have a sick chick and Ive been poking little holes in the watermelon and pouring the electrolyte soution on it. If it wasnt for that I think she would be super dehydrated. Im having a major battle with infectious bronchitis, Ive lost 7 chicks so far.......

Just checked on Ginger and she seems a little more alert and tonite drank on her own with me holding the cup up her. She also ate some mealy worms from my hand and had a few pecks at some scrambled egg. I got my fingers crosseded but feeling more hopefull that she'll recover. Tommorrow I'll see if i can;t find some CoRid What are some other products for my chicken medicine cabinet?

Heres some ideas. I just recently got some Sav a Chick electrolytes, Blucote spray on and a bottle with the dauber, some Vet RX, Tylan, some Durmycin (not sure if I spelled that right, its a powdered antibiotic), and Oxine. This may sound nutty, but Im a firm believer in being prepared so in addtion to a supply of emergency water and food for myself, I also have a reserve of water and feed for my chickens, even extra pine shavings and hay. I also have dog and cat food set aside too, all of which I rotate so it doesnt expire. And oh yeah, lots of TP! I just got these really cool emergency water kits, its a 5 gallon bladder that fits into a nice box, its pretty cheap and with one kit you can store 25 gallons of water. Plus they stack away pretty nice too.

Thats a great list! So is there a reason for the neosporin without the pain relief? Also what is Valbazen and Sevin? I have vitamin E, is that for topical or internal? Thanks!

The pain relief in neosporin has been known to react negatively on chickens..causing death.

The Valbazen is the dewormer of choice with most of the knowledgeable people on here.

Sevin powder is used in dust baths and for dusting your chickens to get rid of the nasty external buggies that they can pick up from outside wild birds.

The vitamin E is for internal use. Some chickens can develop vitamin deficiencies and the poly vi sol, without iron, and vitamin E are used to treat.

Wow thats HUGE about the neosporin. Thats the kind I typically buy. EEEK! Thank you! I use DE for the dust bath thing. I sprinkle it in the coop and in the run whenever I put new shavings down.

If your birds get external parasites, the DE will not get rid of them. You will need something stronger to take care of them.
