My 2 year-old Ameracauna hen was(is) egg bound. I went to the vet today and he gave her a shot of oxytocin. It did not seem like the egg was going to move (it was in a really weird spot). I put a glove on a few minutes ago and tried to feel the egg (it could not be palpated before) and it had moved forward. So I tried to carefully help it forward, but the shell was softer and it cracked inside the chicken. Yolk did come out, but no shell.

Has this happened to your chicken, and if so, will the shell come out on its own? Any suggestions?

Your main concern now is a possible bacterial infection inside her. Use a large syringe without a needle, mixing 1 tablespoon of WHITE vinegar to 1 quart of water, like a douche. Use a full syringe of the mixture and insert the syringe just inside her vent and flush. Dont squirt it in too hard. Use about 4-5 syringefuls, the liquid may or not flow out of her vent afterwards. This is normal. If you see the soft shell at anytime hanging out the vent, very slowly and gently pull it out.

Thanks for the response. I will try that. She also had a Convenia shot (antimicrobial) when she was there today, so hopefully that helps.
