I'm always on the look out for odd behaviors in my flock so when my one year old Cochin started to whimpering instead of clucking a month ago, it definitely caught my attention. I was trying to figure out if she was sick or injured. Nope. She just has stopped clucking and making normal chicken sounds and instead she sounds like a puppy whimpering when she has found a nice morsel or is out ranging with the rest of the girls. So strange.

Anyone else have a chicken that sounds like a dog?

I have a five-year old Black Cochin that sounds just as your describe yours. Sometimes I get right down at her level and look her right in the eyes, and ask, "what's wrong, Morgan?" She goes on and on and on, just whining and whining. When she came off molt, I thought she might be having problems starting to lay eggs again. So I gave her numerous warm water soaks. They did have the effect of getting her started laying, but the whining has continued even though she is laying regularly, seemingly with no complications.

I've concluded she's just enjoying the sound of herself whining.

Here's Morgan in a tub of warm water soaking. She acts like she's entitled to this special treatment and deserves to have it every day.

Nice chicken @azygous
I agree I have a hen who makes dog like sounds too except she has done this her whole life. I'm guessing that some chickens just like to make differant noices and as they grow and mature there voices just change. I think that that's perfectly normal. :)

Well, why not. I've even heard of cats barking like dogs. LOL!!!

Some animals must think that they need to change their genus. Sorry, critters. You can't just up and decide you want to be something that you weren't born as.
