Hen with an inside-out bum

What are you feeding them? Do they have free choice oyster shell? A poultry expert friend says insufficient calcium can cause a variety of reproductive problems.

This is one of my white Leghorn hens who suffered a complete prolaps. The entire oviduct has some out. Sadly this hen passed away within a few minutes of me finding her:

Yep, they have a trough of oyster shells but they don't eat that very often, so we also toss in a few handfuls of shells into their scratch every day. I was thinking I might bury some scratch into their shells to remind them that they are there.

Oh My goodness. That's horrible! You poor thing. Poor hen.

Ours wasn't anywhere near that bad, maybe about half the size of an egg, and the tissue was mostly white.

A small prolaps can sometimes be soaked in sugar water to reduce swelling and then pushed back in. However, the hen is more likely have to have the some troblem again.
