Has anyone experienced this with their hens? My 7 month old barred Rock has this area, as seen in the photo, that is bare and red looking below her vent. She is eating , drinking, and laying normal. Any advice on what this is or what to do about it? It is now getting below freezing at night and I worry about her without feathers covering the area.

That is where a lot of feather picking birds will pull feathers off their flock mates so I would see if you have a feather picker, other thoughts are molting, mites, or a chunky poop ball falling off with the feathers.

My advise is to read up on feather mites a.k.a. depluming mites. These pests can cause enough misery that a hen will pull out her own feathers in an attempt to get relief.
