I have one hen that has a bare spot on her back in front of her tail feathers and it is bleeding, I saw one hen peck at it today. What can I do about it and does anyone know what could have happened????

Thanks!!!

A rooster has had his way with her and while doing it, he pulled her feathers out. They do this.
A hen apron is a type of "skirt" that covers her back so he won't be able to pull them out again.
Look in the auction section.

Three of my 17 ladies have had the same issue. It's a completly bald spot about the size of a lime at the base ot the tial feathers. All happen to be 3 of the 4 of the wyandottes out of the bunch. It's not pecking since it hasen't goten worse - and belive me if it was pecking the austolps would have pecked them down. From my searches here, some say it's molting (which makes no sense ot me); others say its pecking (which it isn't, exccept for the chance of an isolated one day thing). The one most common and probably related factor I have seen is - the onset of colder weather.

I just had this happen to one of our hens, no blood, looked like something grabbed her and she got away, looking closer she had plucked feathers around her head and a big handful from top of her butt... could be a molt but just looked more like she was grabbed. There is no rooser in this group and they are not let out with a rooster just in thier own group. They are our egglayers. At first I thought something grabbed her, then when I saw the feathers missing from her face I thought maybe lice, none of the other birds were affected, so treated the whole flock with the powder as a preacaution....But it seemed to get a little worse, So I set up critter cam, and It seems that after I moved the 2 breeding birds into the breeding pen with the rooster this group of girls got a little pckey with each other, one of the hens just seemed a littel rialed and was really picking at her, she turned around backwards to avoid the facial assalt, and she was ripping at the back of her., maybe because her roost mate was taken away, Im not sure but shes irratable. she walked all the way down the roost bar and pecked my hand when I was setting up the cam we had for foaling mares so we didnt have to walk out every so often, just watch on TV ..Was she mad at me cause I moved her freind? who know what chickens think.first time all year they let up on egg laying too. they dropped from out of 6 hens ...from 5 - 6 eggs per day all winter to 2 or three right now.

Thanks for all the help! I'm going to separate her from the rooster and the other hens tomorrow, and treat it with Cut-Heal liquid wound care since it is bloody from all the others pecking at her. It must have happened within one day b/c I let them out of their pen every afternoon and I didn't notice anything yesterday. She is acting normal, so maybe she'll get better soon. I like getting 5 eggs a day and I don't want anything to happen to her. Thanks again.

If you go to the blue bar at the top of this page, click "INDEX". On the index page, scroll to the bottom section "BUY SELL TRADE" and you'll see the auction areas below the heading.
I just bought aprons today from LovemyChix.
