Maybe you should take the heater out of the coop. It might be making it too humid in there. A coop should be dry first and then if needed ( which IMHO it's not) heated. How's the ventilation. A few weeks ago my chickens, 4: Buff, ISABrown 2 SLW made it through -10. Today was in the high teens to maybe 22 and I check their water every 2 hours NO frozen water. Tonight at 5 PM when I put them to bed their water was not frozen and it has been 2 1/2 hours since I had checked it. I went grocery shopping. I've decided that my chickens are keeping the enclosed run and coop plenty warm. I have a clear tarp with white "fencing like" strips on it all around the fenced in part of the run. Works great. No frostbite. I check every morning. Even with the coop open today the water didn't freeze. I have a heater and a galvanized waterer out side. Plugged in all the time but didn't get it in the coop before coop froze to the ground. I really don't want it there for fire reasons.

Plenty of ventilation. The heater is just a heating pad that maintains 40 degrees and it's only in one area of the coop since the chickens do a good job of keeping it warm. I'll try and take some pictures.

Yes. I went out to take pictures and she is no longer with us. I am so upset that I couldn't do anything for her. The top of her head was bleeding when I went out. I went to lightly clean it up and she went right down. I moved her to where she can be by herself. May sound silly but I put a blanket on her so she could stay warm. She's barely breathing.

So sorry for your loss. Do you think that she was ill, and the other chickens may have pecked her causing her wattles and beak to turn black with dried blood? Then when you rubbed off the black dried blood, that it was bloody? With an unknown cause of death in your chicken, it is always good to get a necropsy by your state vet if you refrigerate the body. She was with the ducks. It is possible that they did something to her because she was weak. She just had a dark look about her. Like she was having trouble breathing. It's just so sad and I don't like not knowing what to do for them all the time. I wish I was a vet!
