Hi, one of our hens just got Fly Strike. We’ve given her multiple epsom salt baths and have pulled most all the maggots we can out. The last bath we saw no maggots. But we aren’t sure what to do about her wounds. Their right near her vent so we are wondering if there is any good treatments for this?

Hello, and :welcome!!! Give her vitamins and electrolytes and keep her hydrated for a day or two. Flush the wound with either Betadine diluted in water, saline water, or Vetericyn spray. Dry the wound. You can use a hair dryer set on low heat. Avoid any ointments. Keep doing this two to three times a day until the maggots are gone and the wound is fully healed. :)

Welcome To BYC

Can you please post some photos?
How old is she?

Hopefully there's no more maggots, but if there is, then a good daily soak like you are doing would be good.
I'd swab the wound with Chlorhexidine, then pack the wound with triple antibiotic ointment.

If it's right near the vent where it will get soiled, then a dilute mixture of chlorhexidine in a spray bottle can be used to help "rinse" the area throughout the day. Of course, give her a good cleanup if needed.

Is she alert, eating/drinking o.k.?
The wound has not breached the coelomic cavity has it?

Ok thanks. I’ll try to get a photo of her. She is 2 years old. She is definitely more alert she flew out of her box in our basement onto the cardboard boxes:lol:

She is has defiantly gotten better.… she used to be really lethargic but now she is alert and clucking for her flock… her vent certainly doesn’t look normal though

Here’s a photo! As you can probably see we just gave her a bath and are drying her off.
