I'm hen sitting this week for a good friend. This hen, a 2 year old Maran, has had leg/foot problems for about 3 weeks. She'll stand with her weight on both feet but when she walks she puts her weight on the outside of her foot and her hock juts out with each step. I'm attaching a video I took this morning. My friend was unable to have her x-rayed and concluded it was a broken inside toe and has had it splinted and wrapped. The hen uses that foot to scratch and is in every other way happy and healthy. She'll curl the toes on that foot but only occasionally. She's in a crate resting and we put her in an empty yard to exercise a couple times a day. She can see our chickens but not get near them. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this? If so, what did you do? Thanks for any input!

I understand rural internet... tends to be a bit unreliable!
To me it looks more like the hock joint is the issue, but very hard to tell in a short video. I don't know if this will help, but a manual on examining for fractures etc. and how to splint the various types. It may help you to at least identify where exactly the issue is.

Thank you! There was definitely helpful information in there!

We went over her leg pretty well last night and the problem does feel like its her hock. The joint is definitely a bit swollen and has heat. The exact cause isn't clear so were going to have our vet take a look and x-ray if necessary and any other diagnostics we think would help. Thanks again!
