Hello all, I have a hen that has one side of her face under her eye swollen. It started out very slightly swollen 3 days ago and today progressed down to her beak with a black spot at the corner of her beak. I tried to look in her mouth but she pecks and shakes so I can’t see. I’m attaching photos. Does anyone know what this is and what the treatment is?
Thank you for your help

I was literally just at the vet this morning with a hen who had a swollen eye and face.

She was a lot worse last week (couldn't get to the vet until today). What really seems to have helped is doing a saline wash in both eyes every day.

The vet said that their sinus system runs all around the face, so a little blockage or inflammation in one spot can cause the whole system to "back up" and swell the whole face.

You might try using an eye wash, because at the very least it will not hurt.

In the case of my chicken, the vet said that it was likely viral.

This is just my experience, though, and others might have a better understanding of what your hen has going on.

It is very important to have someone helpyou wrap her in a towel, and open her beak and try to get a picture of her open beak and tongue. Look especially on the side of the swelling inside for any yellow or bad smelling gunk, which could be canker/trichomoniasis. A tumor might also be possible. A sting or a respiratory sinus infection are the other possibilities. Does the dark spot look like a peck or sting?

The dark spot doesn’t look like a peck. I’ve had her separated for 3 days so no one can get to her. It doesn’t look like a sting to me either. The swelling looks like it covers more area overnight and has gotten down to the side of her beak. It was a mild swelling under her eye for the 3 days prior. I’ve been giving her electrolytes and vitamins since I noticed the swelling initially.

I finally have a picture of the inside of her mouth. I don’t see any lesions and it doesn’t smell but it does show the black spot in the corner of her beak better.

Could that black spot actually be an injury? Or a fowl pox lesion?

The rest of the mouth looks pretty good to me.
I’m not sure what she has going on. I know it isn’t an injury I have her by herself and the spot showed up 3 days after quarantine. I want to get her better but other than vitamins and electrolytes I don’t know what to do for since I have no idea what this is.
