Poor Thalia flapped her wings today and I noticed a brown thing on her side. I caught her to take a look. I saw a very disgusting sore on her side! Jasper, our rooster is being waaaay too friendly leaving most of the girls with bare backs and me having to buy saddles. The injury is very large and appears to have mud in it. Today is the first day that I noticed it and I quickly checked the others. Everyone else was fine. We put Vaseline on it to keep it from drying out and cracking and bleeding. WHat can we do to make it better and make her more comfortable? I feel so bad for her that we just saw it today! Any advice is greatly appriciated!

Here is a pic of the injury. It is right at her pelvic bone on her left side.

This is the poor Thalia.

Clean the wound with 50/50 warm water/betadine solution as best as you can. Then put neosporin without pain reliever liberally on the wound. Continue with neosporin treatment til it completely heals. I recommend you somehow keep your rooster away from Thalia til she heals, or seperate her in a cage. If you do the latter, make sure she has feed and water.

I PMed you about the saddle, lilac. Thanks so much! Thanks for the advice Dawg! I will do that in the morning, as it is almost dark now and I'm not sure if we have betadine around.

OMG! I notice last week that one of my hen had a cut on the side exactly like your hen. Thanks for posting this up, this gave me the answers that I needed.
