Lynn, I'm not against that, but Jasper is not exactly tame. He was a rescue and he doesnt tolerate being handled very well.

Yes, thank you so much sweetxlilac! I appriciate this so much!

Well, we moved Thalia over to the other coop without a rooster. The little thing actually DUSTBATHED yesterday! Right after i put neosporin on the wound, too! It was caked with mud, so I had to pin her down in the outdoor cage and wipe all of the mud out with a baby wipe. Then, I re-applied the neosporin and will be monitering her MUCH more carefully from now on.

poor girl! keep that cut clean. i recommend you wrap jasper in a towel so he can't peck or scratch you (you may need someone else to help you) and either use one of those automatic nail files for dogs to file down his spurs or do it by hand. also, just cutting the tip off to make it blunt doesn't hurt them, it only hurts if you draw blood. you should trim his nails and beak also if you can manage it.... good luck

We have had problems with overzealous roos ripping our girls' sides, too. What I do is fill the sink with warm water and betadine diluted to about a weak tea in color. I soak the girls in the sink for about 10 minutes. That way the betadine gets into the wounds that I can see as well as the ones that may be there that I can't see. I don't use Neosporin or any other ointment for just that reason - it's a dirt magnet, and also the feathers get stuck in it and I'm afraid may even irritate the wound further. I don't even try to cover it. After it's healed I will put an apron on that hen, but keep an eye out - sometimes they still get hurt because the apron doesn't go down far enough on the sides.

Good luck with your girl!

dremels work GREAT on spurs, nails, and beaks. big unruly birds - volunteer hold the squirmer with a kids sock over the head and the body in a towel with one leg out at a time and hold SECURELY - while you file it down. make sure if you use a dremel you swipe it once or twice in a spurt and stop, swipe, pause, swipe, pause. this way it doesn't heat up the spur or nails causing them pain.
