HI, I've been watching this thread closely too.
When dealing with abcesses, it's usually a good idea to leave open to drain. Now I understad this is going to be difficult with a chicken and feathers and all, but if sewn up, the possibility of regrowth of the infection is very high. If you open the lower stitches and get some small tape gauze to "poke" up into the cavity (carefully), it will drain and you can even soak the gauze in an antibiotic solution before packing. Pull it out once a day and the wound/cavity should shrink quickly.
Just don't reclose it if you find any puss in the old wound.
Hope this helps.

Marvelous idea PeeperKeeper! Thank you for the information, that is exactly what we will do! I didn't even think about that! That is why I just love you guys.

Excellent idea Peeper!

When my horse got a really deep gash (it was more like an inch and a half deep hole), I would rinse it out twice a day and pull the scab off so it would close from the inside out. I couldn't bandage it due to where it was, so I just put alot of goop on it so at least the wound had a coating of something on it.

My Mother uses lime for wounds like you are talking about. She had a mare with a hole on her withers. She would wash the wound out and pack lime in it. Now, you can't tell the mare even got hurt. It works great. I hope she heals alright. You are the best for helping her.

How's Hope today? I have been gone all weekend. Sounds as she did good, then took a bit of a U turn. I pray she is better!

Hoping the drain worked well for Hope. I have been thinking of her too. Keep us posted.

Sorry everyone for not posting sooner been a rotten few days(death of a friend) anyway Hope is doing great! Fitting right in with her sisters but I think the roo is gonna have to go he keeps beating up my banty roo and a couple of the hens as well we are holding off to see if attitudes change.I mean some of the hens from his flock because they are just plain mean old hens and we are trying to figure out who's laying and who's not because some of them are very old. Haven't drained because it just doesn't seem to be the right time or size isn't cumbersome to her and since she is doing so well I kinda don't want to screw her up even more if I don't have to ya know? But thank-you everyone for being here for us.
