Hen with wound under wing

I'm big on leaving stuff alone and not doing too much. Chickens in general are good at healing. I wouldn't be pulling off scabs or even trying to soften them. Nature usually knows what it is doing. It's hard for humans to leave it be sometimes. I only step in if it appears it isn't healing or the bird looks sick, which so far has been never.

I’m okay not removing the scab...I don’t know if I have the stomach for that! I’ll put her back on the roost in the morning and keep an eye out for infection, fly strike & blood and only intervene if necessary. I agree less is more usually. I’m also going to look into making or purchasing a hen saddle/apron to help protect her from future injuries.

Your hen already has that nice black scab that means it's healing well. It probably also means the wound has been there a while, and no one has been picking on it.

I have seen stuff heal up without intervention that I swore wouldn't. I have had turkeys with deep mating wounds down to the bone that have healed on their own without me doing anything but applying bluekote occasionally.

I'm always surprised by their healing abilities. It's another thing that's amazing about chickens.

Totally off subject, but I see you’re from central Wisconsin. Did you have severe weather today? I have an aunt in Waupun and she had a bunch of trees down, possibly a tornado. Hope you’re safe!

Thankfully the bad stuff missed us and went south and north. We finally got a decent amount of rain after a long hot dry August. Hopefully your Aunt is okay. Cleaning up downed trees is no fun.

I agree with @micstrachan, and would again advise keep an eye out for fly strike. As rough as it looks, that wound has already started healing.

A good news update; Stella’s wound seems to have healed well without my interference, although she hasn’t laid an egg in a few days. But they’re slowly beginning to molt, so I’m chalking it up to that. I’ll continue to monitor, but Stella & I thank you all for your advice!!!

Good to hear. I found a gash on one of my hens today. First time ever. I had neglected to trim the rooster spurs yet this year, and one has paid the price for my putting it off. Mine seems to be healing already though she got a spritz of bluekote. Time to do my rooster round up before someone else gets cut.
