How old does a hen have to be to lay an egg?

While there's no set age for a hen to lay, they typically begin laying around 5-6 months old.

Mine were about 5 months old. It also varies by breed, but not largely so. Mine are mutts

Usually when the comb starts to get a nice red color, the eggs are soon to come.

I have 6 hens that are 4mos 3 weeks old and only 1 has been laying for almost 2 weeks now. The others aren't yet. My EE are still too young, 3 1/2mos, so it will be a while yet. Being patient sucks sometimes lol. Hopefully yours will start laying soon.

This is my hen is she a good breed for laying eggs or is she a bad breed for laying hens.

I'm not an expert on breeds, but she looks like a mixed breed, possibly with some Barred Rock in her. Barred Rocks are wonderful layers and judging by her comb, she should be giving you eggs here soon!
