Six months ago we 'adopted' four wonderful hens - two New Hampshire and two Light Sussex. They are an absolute delight and we can't imagine life without them now. We have had a few worries but our girls are resilient and we work through their issues. However, one of my girls is now losing her feathers from the top down, literally.

One morning we noticed Hermione had lost a number of feathers from the crown of her head. This is now spreading down her neck. Naturally I am worried and my breeder, from whom I bought the girls, doesn't really know why it is happening. Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you noticed if one or all of the remaining hens are plucking her feathers?

I haven't seen any aggression between the girls except for the occasional gentle 'peck' at the food bowl. The affected bird is otherwise very active and has a great appetite so I know its not lack of anything in particular. They are very spoiled and fed and watered well! It could just be moulting but as we're first-timers we just don't know.

! Great to have you here. Unsure on your hen. It shouldn't be molting as that is more of a fall event. And I think most parasites like mites usually go for areas lower on the bird. have you examined her and the others for any kind of bugs? You might also post your concern in the link below. Good luck to you!

Hi there - I'm sorry I should have mentioned I'm in Tasmania, Australia and it is indeed Autumn (Fall) here right now. But when they moult do they lose feathers just from particular areas on their bodies - such as the head and neck - or should they be moulting all over?

Thanks for the welcome! I'm looking forward to being part of the group and learning how chickens are raised in the USA - as well as in Australia.
