Just to clear up: Both hens and roosters are "chickens." When you say "chicken" it doesn't mean it's a female, kind of like how "dog" doesn't tell you what sex it is. You might well know this, in fact most here do, but it's common where I live for people to think "chicken" refers only to hens.
