This morning I found Henrietta, my Red Star, dead. There were no signs of injury, no coop or run break-ins and I would have heard a chicken kafuffle last night if there had been one because the coop is right outside the house.

There was an absolutely HUGE egg in the coop and I'm wondering if it did her in. It's so large that a regular egg carton was almost too small for it!

I examined her and she looked healthy, just dead...poor girl.

One of my favorites....such a nice chicken. I'll miss her

There is Henrietta between Agatha and Dorothy Maud the Buff Orps.

And here is the GIANT egg on the right. It sits next to yesterdays brown eggs and regular large store-bought eggs.

So sorry to hear about Henrietta!

I don't think the egg could have done it. It's big, but not humongous. Sometimes they just die. I know it doesn't make you feel any better, but they do. She could have had a heart problem, that you would have never known about. Or, maybe threw a blot clot from an old injury. You just don't know.

You know she wasn't in pain, because you would have heard her squawking, so that is a relief. Sounds like she died in her sleep.

Again, I am really sorry about your Henrietta.

I agree it's better to have found her with no injuries. I wouldn't have liked to have found her mutilated from a predator.

She was one of my friendly girls that liked to be held and talked to. Thankfully she and I had a chat yesterday and she talked to me in her gentle voice.

That's definately the hard part of having chickens as pets! I get very attached to all of my animals and birds!

So sorry for your loss MissCluck. My experience with BO's is that this seems to be the way they go. Just quietly in their sleep. I've lost two in just the same way. And it always seems to be the hardest loss of all to take. BO's have such a sweet nature and gentle faces. I hope you can take some solace in knowing she didn't apparently suffer.
