Two of my buff Orp hens are acting very strange. They have been staying in the coop for a few days. Sitting on a perch. I tried to feed and water them. One ate, both drank. The other picked up a piece of corn then dropped it. But wouldn't eat. I'm worried.

Neither are laying, will not come out, one won't eat. Both have dirty butts. But not enough to clog them up. It just looks messy.

(My two RIR are acting normal but they have messy butts too.)

Whats going on!? I don't want them to die.

I normally get about 8 eggs a day from my free rangers, now I am getting about 2. So something is wrong. Please help.

I would say it is E.coli and the nervous system is effected

(1)do this immediately
she needs neurolodigal vit E and Vit B complex for nervous disorder
(1-B and the Vit E is also for the E.coli

(2) and feed all the chickens water with apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp to pint of water
Do this till after the chickens are better. Should

(3 immediately give the chickens each ( the two effected) 1000 mg capsule of liquid Vit E by cutting the end of the capsule and taking the vit E capsule letting the oil drip into their beaks

(4 also need to crush a vit B complex pill in a tbsp and put it into a tsp of water and put it in the chickens beak after it is disolved using a eye dropper

(4-B Do both Vit's twice today then for 7 days till you see some improvement in the chicken

(4-C then give twice a week for two weeks should see much improvement

(5 generally the shock of a event like E.coli will cause chickens to have this nerve damage
the manure mess on the feathers is E.coli

(6 after today I would see if the chickens will eat a
natural probiotic wet mash
2 tsp of dry crumbles
4 tsp of milk sweet, sour or buttermilk
1 tbsp of non flavored yogurt
mix good and put the
vit E liquid as directed in the wet mash
and crumble the Vit B complex tablet in a tabsp and add to the wet mash

(7 Do this twice a day for 7 days to see if the chicken is better
then do this once a day for another week then once a week for a while
this should give the nervous system some stability

(8 you can email by PM for more information and include this inf so I

Have they been wormed recently? You can google diarrhea in chickens, but it sounds like they may have worms. Have you noticed any blood in their poop?

First and foremost would be getting those that aren't eating and drinking, to do so! Try offering them hard boiled or scrambled eggs to up the protein. Very good for them. You can also try mixing their feed with milk until it is crumbly and offering that. Mine happen to love it! And again, suppose to be good for them.

Soak their butts in warm water to clean them up. Make sure they don't have lice while bathing them. Lice can be treated with Sevin dust. They are tiny grayish looking creatures that move quickly. Notmally seen at the vent area, and/or the neck. Coop and all chicks must be treated if lice are seen.

How's their comb looking? How about the crop? I assuming they aren't laying, so could they be egg bound? Soaking in warm water would help that if they are.

How old are they?

Any sneezing, coughing, running nostrils, or discharge from eyes?

Thinking we need a bit more info here in order to help figure out what is wrong, but like I stated, I'd get them eating, and drinking first. That will bide us a bit of time to help them.

Please keep us posted!!

Oh, and if at all possible, keep those that aren't up to par away from the rest of the flock just in case they are contagious. Sounds like the RIR, and the Buff's are the ones that are showing symptoms at this time, so keep them all together, and away from the others until we can try to figure out what the problem is.

My first guess would be worms, but we'll see with more info what we're dealing with.

agree...
but do post back with any other symptoms..
check for wheezing, etc, as nottheMomma posted

if you could possibly take a fresh fecal sample to a vet for a worm and cocci test, (spometimes called a fecal float)
that would be helpful.
would show which they have, and if wormy..what kinds.

what ALL do you feed?
what bedding do you use?
has the coop been cleaned recently?
do they have access to any stagnant water, lawn/garden chemicals, etc, compost pile..?

They only have a few symtoms.

They aren't laying.

They stay in the coop on a perch.

Messy Butts

Sluggish

The two RIR are acting normal they just have messy butts.

I plan on containing them today. And getting some wormer.

One of the Buffs is eating the other isn't. I haven't noticed any bloody poop. Should I treat them for Cocci? Some of my chicks recently got it, but they had no contact with these hens. And are not acting the same.

The hens are only like 14 months old. They eat egg layer crumbles, and corn mostly. Grass. And sometimes they get Chick Grower crumbles. Plus whatever scraps we throw to them.

I will try the boiled eggs and milky food and see what happens. Would it also be a good idea to put some gatoraid in their water? I know it helps sick goats.
