Hens are kicking everything out of the run! Suggestions?

I've tried straw, hay and wood chips, they kick and scratch it all out of the fence. Is it worth building a "lip" around the bottom of the fence, or just leave the run bare earth?

thats what chickens do. a lip might help, or they might just push everything up to the edge, or over the edge.

The ground isn't perfectly level, either, so I'm afraid if I invest in sand to cover the dirt, it will just wash away....off to look for lip building ideas I suppose.

You can use landscaping metal or plastic barriers for the "lip"
