is this normal. i have had hens for years now and never seen this. It looks like if we were to shrug our shoulders and they stay that way...hmmmmmmm

Are they also fluffed up? Are they laying and maybe going broody. Are they standing when doing this. Do they act otherwise normally?

I just found this thread because my hen has just started doing this. She kind of raises her wings -- it really does look like she's shrugging her shoulders. Then this morning I think I heard her stamping her feet. And she is kind of squatting. Before I found this thread, I was looking up "mean hen". I would like it if she is doing this because she is ready to mate, rather than being mean. To me it really looks as though she is standing her ground. Yesterday I found her eating a flower that she should not be so I got the broom to shoo her away. She squatted, shrugged, and fluffed her feathers. I swear I thought she growled too. What's everyone's take -- mean or amorous?

ALL my hens do this ALL the time. I am really surprised to see this thread. I just assumed everyone else's did it all the time too. Its hilarious. They do it when I catch them off guard. Like the are frozen with fear. The wings go up (shrugged as it is called here) and they look side to side. I love it because it's funny but allso makes them easier to catch if need be. I just dont understand why when they are scared sometimes they run and sometimes they freeze. Doesn't seem like a logical thing for nature to do.
