Our five hens are about 4 1/2 months old. We have RR, BR, Leghorn and two black sex-links. Three are laying already, and for sure two of them are the BR and one sex-link.

Just recently, they have begun to get calmer and friendlier. When they are approached, they do this weird, new thing. They will crouch down, and spread their wings slightly (as though they are sunning themselves), and just hold still. Their tails are not up, like a bird does to be mounted by a male... both head and tail are level with their backs. Sometimes, they kind of shiver, most times, they just hold that pose until we pet/pick up, or walk away.

What is this? Is it fear? Submission? They've never been near a rooster.

Just curious!

Thanks.

they are squatting. Catray44 has one she can turn around and look at and whammo, she assumes the position!

Mine do the same thing, a few of them actually "dance" while they're squatting... like they're stamping their feet. It sure makes them easy to catch when it's time to go back in the coop/pen!

that is so cool. My hen "princess" does that every time I come home. Wherever she is on the property, she comes running and I mean running after my car-I always stop and get out saying her name. As soon as Ibend down she does that funny squat funny wing thing and I pick her right up-I just told my DD about this (shes almost 11 and its her hen) she was so excited to learn that her hen likes her-really likes her!!! thanks for asking that question!!!

Well, that's great! Glad to know they're comfortable with me... they are the funniest, silliest, most entertaining things on the planet!
