Hello, I have a hen that’s almost 1 year old and has a bleeding butt. She’s not laying that I know of and is around 1 1/2 pounds. I’m struggling to figure out my nexts steps to help her recover. She’s eating and drinking. I’m a first time chicken owner so any advice and help would be so so much appreciated!

It does look like she has been vent pecked. Can you see any red prolapse outside the vent? Chickens will naturally peck at something red if there is a prolapse. But they can also peck at vents when they are being aggressive due to breed, boredom, lack of enough protein in the diet, or too little room/overcrowding. I would separate her in a dog crate with food and water. Clean her up and then keep some ointment on the vent area. If she has a prolapse that needs to be kept from drying out with ointment until it goes back inside and stays. If she is just injured plain Neosporin ointment would be good to apply.

Thank you so so much! I’ve managed to clean her up and gently insert her anus back in, then I applied Banixx generously in the area. Now she’s inside in her own little spot with food and water that has electrolytes and protein in it. Is there anything else you’d recommend I make sure to do? Thank you again for replying and helping me❤️

Bannix is good to use, but I would also use an ointment or cream, or honey to keep it moist if it comes back out. It can be common for a hen to have a temporary prolapse when laying or straining to lay an egg. Usually it goes back inside but sometimes another hen will notice and peck at it. Let us know how she gets along.
