My 3 hens are getting black on thier combs but it does not look like dried blood and I have never seen them pecking at each other does anyone have any ideas what this is and what I should do?Thank you

Does it look like scabs? If it's not pecking, could be fowl pox, which is spread by mosquitos. If it's fowl pox, just keep an eye on it and it should go away by itself in a few weeks. Make sure it doesn't close off anything important - nose, eyes, etc.

I don't know where you live, but if it's winter wherever you are, there's also frostbite :p

    Hi Anabel,

When my hens' combs were turning black, it seemed to be a fungal infection. I treated it by applying Malaseb shampoo (active ingredients micanozole nitrate 2% & Chlorhexidine gluconate 2%) with cotton wool, leaving it on for 10 mins then rinsing off with cotton wool and water.
