Hens dying and not sure why????

The more research I have done this afternoon sounds like cocci to me. But can't get the meds here. Will have to order it. But the one that died today she wasn't sick but a day or so and never got skinny or anything. I don't have a microscope but going to make more calls to vets farther away to see if they could test there poop.

I will order Safegard too when I order the other stuff tonight just to keep it on hand.

I just cleaned out their coop too.

Thanks everyone. Its sad to lose one.

Is there a feed store around that might carry the Corid? Sulmet or sulfadimethoxine can also be used. Do you have any antibiotics on hand? Some of those can also be used to treat cocci. Any farm store will have those meds to treat cattle, and any cattle farmer probably has them. Ronott is right about hens at that age having internal laying and cancer problems after 2 years old.

I just went to all three feed stores and they do not carry Corid. I have the antibiotic Duramycin-10 that I did put in their water this morning.

Will get Buttermilk tomorrow. Did just give them yogurt which I give them every couple days.

I am going to order the Corid now and pay the overnight charges so should have it by Friday. I don't want to lose any more girls. And on further reading about this Cocci it also explains why my girls never really got that big. (As big as my friends girls got.)

Sure hope this all works.

Are any of them acting sick now?

I have some corid dosage information:

The Merck Veterinary Manual says that certain antibiotics will treat cocci. Oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline are some of those, and Duramycin is a tetracycline. I wouldn't use it for the treatment long term, but it's use may well help them today and tomorrow. After Corid treatment for 5 days, give them 3 or more days of vitamins and probiotics to help repair the intestinal health and lost vitamins. Buttermilk is a good probiotic, and small amounts of plain yogurt as well. Here is the Merck link on coccidiosis medications:
