Hen's giant dingleberry! Did I do the right thing?!

Perhaps you have inspired me to tackle the poop rocks on my girls. I've been eying them lately thinking I had to do something about them. Egads.

OMG--that would be our hen that was called "skankers!" fot that reason alone. We had to hose off her bum and cut her feathers right down to her skin! Never hurt her-feathers alwasy grew back but...then the dinglberries came back again--I had to get my DH to read this post I was laughing so hard and said" does this ring a bell?" haha he laughed too!

I have several Silkies and Bantam Cochins that also get clumps of poop on their feathered feet. They are not very happy when I try to get it off of them, but if I don't they end up getting it on my shirt when I hold them. (Not to mention that it stinks!)

Bumping up this old thread because I have a hen with a big ol poo dried and stuck in her feathers and when I googled "hen has dingleberry" this came up! It was a good read and a good laugh and some good info. I am glad to know I am not the only one who has a girl with this issue

I had the enjoyable task of cleaning a few butts that weren't so fluffy! I have changed to an all Organic Non-GMO food and it seems many of them are getting more drippy looking rear ends. A couple were downright nasty looking and I like to photograph my birds, so they needed a dip in the sink. Just as others described. I used warm water and pulled the feathers away from the mass of dried poop. I bring them into the washtub in the laundry room and have the water temp lukewarm and once they get it flowing on their behind...they settle down pretty well. I think it feels good to them. Anyhow...a little rubbing and scrubbing with lots of water rinsing and it only took a couple minutes per hen. I did two out of 3 that needed done today. Takes more time to catch them when they aren't feeling like being held than it does to clean them up. OH the joys of chicken keeping!
