Hey everybody!

My three brown leghorns, two RIR's and two Jersey Giants are sixteen weeks old now and have grown huge! They have recently started to sport some large, bright red combs. My question to those who have already gone through this is: how long did it take your hens to lay after they started to grow bright red combs? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

last summer when it got sooooo hot here, I noticed my hens started growing larger combs. I read somewhere on the forum that they use it as a cooling mechanism or it had something to do with helping to cool them off. Don't know how true it is or not, but it seemed to make sense. I knew they were hens because they were laying.

It wasn't long after the comb sprouted full size. One sure sign is squatting. Once they squat when you reach down to pet them, their ready to lay.
