I have a small flock and pretty much all of my birds are over 6 years old. Two of them, Mega and Rusty, have been fighting non-stop for weeks now. Rusty tends to go broody a lot, and when they began to fight I believe it was because Mega wanted to use the nest Rusty was in. They fought pretty badly, both of them were bloody on the faces, so I decided to keep them separated. Usually keeping one in the run and one outside in the yard during the day is enough, but for the first time since I began to keep chickens, they fought through the wire fence. the openings in the fence are 2 by 4 inches, so they both hurt their faces badly again and even their feet and claws. We covered the bottom part of the fence with plastic and have been rotating the flock every day, mornings Mega and two other chickens are outside, rusty and the rest are in the run. At night i grab Mega and put her in a crate because she would just try to fight Rusty as they settle for the night.
I'm getting tired of this. Usually they go back to normal after they fight, but Mega keeps looking for a fight. I, and whoever is at home at the time, have to be physically with them to separate them if we let them all together. Mega is clever and only stares and flaps her wings at Rusty, who flaps back but doesn't actively looks for a fight.
It's been weeks of this, so what should I do? Should I let them fight and see if they finally get over it?
