Hi everybody! I currently live in Charlottesville, VA, which does allow us to keep hens in our backyard. My husband and I are thinking about moving to NYC in the next couple of years. Does anybody here keep chickens in Manhattan or any of the boroughs? If so, are rooftops ok or do you need a property with a backyard? How do rooftop terraces work, are they shared or do you have to live on the top floor in order to keep a garden/chickens up there? We are thinking specifically Brooklyn.
Thanks!!

I don't have chickens yet but I live in Brooklyn and want to get some!

My understanding is that hens are allowed in NYC, but not roosters. A friend had a few chickens, and one of them turned out to be a rooster. Within about two days of the rooster beginning to crow, a city official showed up and told her she had a certain number of days to get rid of the rooster.

I'm not sure how many you can have.
Here's a Daily News article about it: http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local...milies_raise_chickens_for_eggs_in_red_-1.html
