We have a hen we resuced who was in bad shape. Big black ball on her knee joint with maggots and hopped everywhere. Epsom salt baths and meds; but she wasnt getting better. We were about to cull her when i walked into her coop and saw her leg laying on the ground- NOT attatched to her.

She was still alive and walking around, her eyes weren't cloudy or anything. she hopped around the grassy yard for a bit before we put hydogen peroxide on her leg and acetone. She actually seems to be doing good, shes been making alert calls (so she still has a will to live)

But what do we do now? Apparently her leg is just a knub with a scab over the bottom now, and a little bit of her knee joint is showing.

Do we need to sew it up, or bandage it?? If so, how do we do that? if its possible to do at home remedies, id prefer that. We have recent financial issues. If i notice her eyes are cloudy or shes in pain, were just going to cull her.

Shes about 3 or 4, no medical issue, this just developed last year according to the previous owner

I would apply antibiotic ointment to the 'stub' and make sure that she does not get fly strike there again.
Ok thanks. She actually really active for some reason, she ran around the whole yard faster than she was when she had 2 legs. Shes been jumping , flying, and doing the "chicken zoomies" thing.

I hope that means shes doing good, were giving her meds and egg yolks mixed in with her food to boost her immune system or try to boost it

By no means an expert but I've read about chicken that self-amputate after frostbite, maybe this is similar? You might find helpful info if you look for posts from others who dealt with that in these forums.

I'd continue with epsom salt baths until the stump fully heals.

Wow. That is wild, like a chicken horror movie. I'm not making fun, just thinking how gnarly it would be to find a little chicken leg lying out in the yard😮 But hey, I've got a Mastiff that only has 3 legs and she's healthy, happy, sassy and can run about 3/4 speed of our other dog.

Sounds like your girl is doing alright!!

Hopefully she will continue to do good! :)
She really enjoyed being outside, and it was pretty spooky seeing her leg on the ground lol
