I did a knee jerk reaction to one of my Black Star hens yesterday. I was dusting her while she was sitting in my lap. She jumped off my lap and I instinctively grabbed her by her right leg and put her back on my lap. I did not twist her leg. I put her down on the ground after dusting and she hobbled off on her left leg, holding her right leg up. My heart sank and I knew I screwed up and knew I shouldnt have grabbed her like I did. I put her in the hospital cage in the garage where she's getting the royal treatment. She's eating and drinking well and even layed an egg yesterday afternoon. She was sitting in the cage leaning on her left side, favoring her right leg. This morning I checked on her and she is still hobbling like yesterday. There's no swelling at all with her right leg. I know time heals if it's a sprain or pulled muscle. I've been feeding her scrambled egg mixed with plain yogurt and canned beef catfood, nutra drench in her water and vitamin B sprinkled in her regular feed, her poops are normal. What do I do if her leg is dislocated? I'm really upset with myself and could use some advice.

Just saw this & wanted to say I felt for your situation. I'm sorry someone didn't write a response back then.
I, too, agonize when I accidentally hurt a chicken. But when you have chickens you do things for & with, it happens. Somewhat often, truthfully. I guess we can comfort ourselves in those kinds of times by knowing chickens get hurt many ways in a normal course of living, and as conscientious owners, we help decrease a great number of those potential hurts by good care we continually give.
Your caring shows in the special treatment you gave to help her after her leg got hurt. It sounds like it was a painful accident for you along with her. I know how it can be. I commend the caring in your heart & hope you forgave your human-ness.

dont owrry if there is no swelling she should walk on it again soon keep her warm and make sure she isnt swolen

The Black Star hen survived for about one year hopping around on one leg. I kept her seperated from my other chickens, they wanted to eliminate her.
She got her own pen and was happy as can be hopping around on one leg almost like a normal chicken; eating grass and taking dust baths. She always laid an egg under a bush in the pen. In the evening I caged her in the garage for the night, she was unable to roost.
Unfortunately her good leg finally gave out, due to bearing the extra weight and pressure put on it I suppose. I had to cull her.
