I noticed one of my red sexlink hens, (21 weeks old), making a gurgling noise when I went out to close up the coop for the night, (a week and a half ago). The days here have been quite warm and the nighs have been a little chilly so I thought she may have caught a cold.

Three days ago I went out to open up the coop and found her dead under the roost. That night when I closed up the coop I noticed TWO of my hens were making the same gurgling noise.

I have 46 chickens, including 18, 8 week old bantams and 9, 7 week old barred rock & cochin pullets. These are kept in separate pens in a building attached to the coop.

Anyone have a clue as to what may be wrong with my girls, what I can do for them and how to prevent my little ones from getting sick also????

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Immediately isolate the sick hens. Sanitise the roost and all water and feed containers with hot water and chlorox. Clean the bedding and nest boxes too. Anywhere the chicken has touched. If anyone else shows symptoms get them separated immediately and sanitize again.

I've had a bout of Mychoplasma recently which comes out as sneezing, gurgling, bubbly eyes, discharge from nose. Shey aome birds show one symptom, some show all of them. I lost quite a few of mine to it, including some chicks :(

You need to act fast if it is Mycho.. get one of the effected ones to a vet & get it diagnosed. My vet prescribed Tylan Soluble & sold me a big tub for about £30. If they are too ill for the Soluble they may need it injectable. I did it myself & was about £8 for one course of injections for my 10 birds. You have to inject it into the breast muscle once & then again 48 hrs later & it'll work a treat.

I also put some ACV in thier water to break up mucus & Garlic is good for immunity too,
