Hens not laying in their nest boxes

I put their boxes on the ground to try and get them to lay in the boxes but they will not. Yesterday there was one hen sitting in the box. how do I get the rest of them to start laying in them

Sometimes you have to train them...with golf balls in the nest..or fake eggs. I use the plastic easter eggs...filled with gravel. Works every time!

thanks for that! I put some fake eggs in the boxes and one hen decides she wants to be broody. silly thing, oh well I'll just have to break her of it

It worked well for us to make the laying boxes dark and private. We put burlap curtains on the front. Golf balls worked well as our fake eggs; they couldn't push them out of the nest easily.

Thanks. their coops are pretty dark even in the day time, but I wil try thy burlap on the fronts.
