I agree our birds are down on egg production too with all this hot humid weather. Some birds also are on a light moult. I have been thinking about a small a/c unit I have to help them out as you have done!Hiya, and welcome to BYC, Mahlea!![]()
I agree with @FrostRanger that heat can definitely impact the laying of eggs. We installed an air conditioner in our breeding coop a few weeks ago, and it appears to be helping.
Newer layers can be irregular and unpredictable too, but it doesn't last forever. Usually, it's a year or so for our silkies.
We bought a new one at Menards. They happened to be on sale while we were already driving the hour to get there for other stuff. It was $10 cheaper than the equivalent at Walmart. We only need it for a week or two usually. We'd be due for another bout of this heat in August. This one is unseasonable for us. Wednesday, it's supposed to be up to 92°F again. Sheesh, this has been a strange year!I agree our birds are down on egg production too with all this hot humid weather. Some birds also are on a light moult. Do they have access to oyster shell? Even if you feed a layer feed its good to have additional calcium (oyster shell) available. My hens are singing the egg song 4 times a day for 5 days but no egg. They started laying July 5 th. I got one egg a day from 3 hens for 8 days. Now nothing. Are they broody?
Thanks Mahlea
Yes in the feed.Do they have access to oyster shell? Even if you feed a layer feed its good to have additional calcium (oyster shell) available.
I agree that being new layers they will be unpredictable and the heat does affect production.
